Presently, when entering or returning to the UK, travellers must quarantine (self-isolate) for a minimum of 14 days. However, from the 15th December, a new scheme title ‘test to release’ will allow travellers to take a private test to release PCR test after five days. If the test is negative, they can leave quarantine immediately!
This is significant news as many people have been unable to travel as the two-week quarantine has been too prohibitive. For others, ending self-isolation a week early will allow them to return to work and their normal routine.
Breaking quarantine has the potential to be harmful to others and fines of over £6000 can be issued. With that in mind, many people will be relieved that there are now other options.
The news has also been welcomed by the travel and tourism industries who have seen a significant downturn since the pandemic began.
Travellers planning on utilising the scheme must opt-in to test to release on their passenger locator form here.
